2003-10-26 [t6]: How can you set a deadline until you see how fast its possible for entries to be created and entered.....whats the point of a contest if you accidently set the dealine so that you only get 3 or 4 entries just because some people insist that every contest having a deadline would speed things up?? I don't actually see how every contest having a dealine would speed things up.....unless the deadlines are too ridiculously close for people to have time to enter....

2003-10-26 [Fire fae]: I know what you are saying it's true and I understand it. But I also know that when there is no deadline set people tend to think... "well I have time to do this latter".. and them they let it flow and there are no new entreis because they think they still have a long time to go. And as I sayd before this is just an idea.

2003-10-26 [bratkitty]: Maybe after they get enough entries to move out of hte new contest category, then they should be required to set a deadline then? There's a lot of contests that don't have much as far as rules go. At least with a deadline, you know it was a well thought out contest instead of some half baked idea. I made a contest yesterday, but after reading the comments here decided to take it down and wait for some of the others to finish. Seems like a couple of these will be here forever.

2003-10-26 [t6]: well....the frog contest definately has rules...[Lorella] has already run a contest before so we got good rules....but no deadline yet...i mean, its very hard to persuade people that frogs are fun to draw.....even people who do other art contests wont do frog ones....

If no one's interested, then what's the point in keeping it up. And you can always post it later if more people start acting interested. But otherwise I don't see what the big problem is. What's wrong with having so many contests? I like seeing the diversity (one HAS to appeal to someone) And it's not like they're hurting anything... 

2003-10-26 [Farewell]: exactly. why not archive contests with little or no interest and when theres enough participants bring them back up. has nothing to do with a dictatorship or rules. only rule i think is there should always be a deadline and limit as to how many ar allowed. if theres a really good response to one of lets say...dragons...limit to 20 entries, and then start another for the next twenty called dragon2 or something. then there could even be a tournament of champions so to speak.

2003-10-26 [t6]: it depends on the reason for the contest...i saw one that wanted to actually publish a picture...would you really want to force people into making deadlines just so you can see more contests...to be honest i think we'd be better off with contests with no deadlines that take a long time to get good entries than millions of tiny contests with deadlines just to keep you lot happy...people are complaining that there are too many contests to enter...surely forcing deadlines to make them move faster will make tha worse not better....

2003-10-26 [Farewell]: well thats definatly a valid perspective. but no deadlines mean they dont end. and what does do for those of us competeing? why would you run a race with no end or destination. or play a game with no time limit. its the same thing. its not about posting the pic, i can post them anywhere, its about the competition and end result. in the real world we work with deadlines all the time. why should they not apply here?

2003-10-26 [bratkitty]: But deadlines give entries more incentive to get your submissions in sooner and reduces clutter. If there's enough interest, you can always make another contest like it. That's just orginization.

2003-10-26 [t6]: they do apply, it just takes time to figure out a suitable one, you cant make one before you see how many people plan to enter and what time they will have to do it in......theres no point in setting your deadline immediately and making an impossible one...the best deadlines are ones that are made so that people can actually cope with them.....

At least some way to let everyone know when it will end. I myself would be more inclined to submit in a contest that gives that info and seems really organized than one that's just kind of tossed together. They've all got to end sometime.

2003-10-26 [t6]: well, i happen to think that the frog contest is very well organized, we know the prize, judges, and rules, gave examples and made a well organized wiki page but you are saying we aren't because we don't have a deadline...only i thought, seeing as its frog art and not many people are into that, not giving a deadline would give people a better chance to figure out how to draw a frog....it depends on the contest.....a dragon contest or a unicorn contest could get a deadline and millions of entries in a few days....an unusual contest needs time...you can't lump everything together and say it all has to have a deadline immediately or its not organized and shouldn't be here yet....

2003-11-04 [Saffron]: yeah if a contest has a deadline it should be moved to "deadline set" , although it seems to be a hard thing for people to understand... (I think the contests owners themselves should do it)

2003-11-10 [bratkitty]: The x-men contest says it closed back on October 31st. I posted there asking if we vote now, and there hasn't been an answer. Should someone go ahead and move it to the closed category?
